MAPFRE Foundation and the National Police, through the Master Plan of the Central Unit for Citizen Participation, are organising on 14th June from 09:30 to 14:00 at the MAPFRE Foundation Auditorium in Madrid, the conference “School dropout and the digital sphere. Proposals and new methodologies“. It will address different perspectives on school dropout, as well as possible factors that influence dropout. In addition, through a case study, we will learn how the ENDING project has been implemented in schools.
School dropout is one of the most serious problems affecting education in many countries. According to the analysis of the Economically Active Population Survey (EPA) released by the Ministry of Education, 13.9% of people aged 18 to 24 did not complete the second stage of Secondary Education (FP de Grado Medio, Básica o Bachillerato) and did not follow any type of training.
The causes of early school leaving are multiple and complex, but among them has been identified, the misuse of connected technologies, those that allow access to the internet and social networks.
Connected technologies can have positive or negative effects on students’ performance and motivation, depending on how they are used. On the one hand, they can facilitate access to information, resources and educational tools, as well as foster communication and collaboration between teachers, students and families. On the other hand, they can generate distractions, addictions, isolation, cyberbullying or exposure to inappropriate content, which can negatively affect students’ learning and well-being.
The misuse of connected technologies can cause students to lose interest in school activities, spend less time studying and doing homework, have difficulty concentrating and keeping up with lessons, have poor academic performance and low self-esteem, feel disengaged from school and their peers, and eventually decide to drop out of school.
The ENDING project is an initiative launched by a consortium of European organisations that focuses on the role of schools in limiting the consequences of the misuse of connected technologies by putting young people at the centre.
